3D Print (FDM) Design Guide

The 3D printing part is not like an injection molding part that it prefer to have uniform part thickness. The 3D printing part can do infill at the thick or block area. Because of the limitation of the FDM 3D printing process, some details of the part will have limitation.

 

 

Minimum Wall Thickness
The features may break if it is too thin. The suggested minimum wall thickness is 0.8mm.

Minimum Embossed and Engraved Features
The emboss is the feature protruded out on a surface. The engraved details is the feature recessed on a surface. It is better the features are at least 0.8mm. The higher the value the better the feature will be printed.
 

Minimum Clearance
The clearance between two features, walls, or separate parts are recommended to be at 0.5mm minimum.

Maximum Bridge Feature Length
Bridge feature is a horizontal connection between two posts. It is recommended the length of bridging feature is less than 15mm for PLA. Some other materials may need the bridging even shorter. It can avoid the need of supports.

Minimum Angle for Nonsupport Structure
It is recommended to design nonsupport structure to be more than 60 degrees from the horizontal. The part may need to build with supports if the angle is small.
 

Cosmetic Imperfections
3D printing (FDM) part is printed by extruding plastic along a defined path. The part was built layer by layer to form the part. The part surfaces may show imperfections. If the better surface finish is needed, the part may do secondary operation such as polishing.
